Home Improvement is More than a TV Show

Home Improvement is the best way to increase your home’s value, make it more comfortable and livable, and to increase your pride of ownership.

Remodeling and Improving your home can actually pay for itself!  That’s right, pay for itself.

Most improvements have a significant return on investment.  Expert rate, depending on the renovation project, that home remodeling projects will increase the value of your home by anywhere from 50 to 80% of what you spend.  There is no other utility purchase that comes even close to that.  Consider if you buy a car for $25000.  As soon as you drive off the lot, on average, the value of the vehicle decreases by at least 20%.

There are other benefits to fixing up your home.  With the right products like insulated siding, high efficiency windows, light colored roofing, and other energy efficient products, you can save money month after month on utilities.  If you pay $300 per month on utilities before you do any projects.  And after you save only 25% (homeowners have reported saving 20-50% or more), you would be saving $75 per month.

home remodeling saves you money

There are also some tax incentives available on certain projects and certain products (check with your accountant) that can qualify you for up to a $500 tax credit.  That’s not a $500 deduction but a 500 dollars directly taken off of your taxes.  Your accountant should be able to point you in the right direct as to what projects qualify.

Beyond the money you are saving on utilities and energy, the money you are putting back in your pocket in tax savings, and the valued increase of your home by making improvement, these projects also make your home more comfortable, cleaner, more attractive (curb appeal), and make you proud of your home.

So as you can see, there are money advantages to completing home improvement projects, especially on the exterior of your home.  Not only financially but also aesthetically and kinetically.

Replacement Windows

When you decide to replace windows in and around your home, make use of a reputable window replacement contractor. The windows you choose should add value and warmth to the way your home looks from the outside. The windows should provide adequate protection, ask your contractor about any warranties that they can offer you when purchasing new windows.
A good brand will usually come with a warranty on the craftsmanship of the window as well as a warranty for frames and other parts that come with the installation. Some companies can even offer you with cover incase your window breaks due to an accidental incident.

Ask for a consultation from your window replacement contractor whereby they will come out to your home and offer you the best advice on choosing windows for your home. You will want to ensure that the style of windows that you select will fit into your existing décor and the exterior of your home.

Take into consideration the amount of money you are willing to spend on new windows and inquire about available credit options if you wish to pay your windows off. Another important aspect to keep in mind is the type of area you live in. If you experience very hot summers and extremely cold winters you will want a window that offers you adequate protection.

Ask your window replacement contratctor about the different types of windows on offer and the benefits of each type of material. Once you have acquired this information you will be able to make the best choice on which window will work for your home.

Looking For a Roofing, Siding, and Windows Contractor? Insist On Estimates

Roofing Contractor

The old motto “trust but verify” is perhaps the most important thing that should be clear in your mind as you set out to find a reputable roofing, siding, and windows contractor. You basically want to rest assured that you’re paying for what you really deserve to spend on. Most importantly, you want to maximize your value for money by striking a balance between costs and benefits.
Why Estimates are a Must-Have for Effective Decision Making
Before choosing a roofing contractor, make sure to gather a few estimates so you only end up with one who beats the competition in terms of pricing and commitment to quality. So take your time to gather some estimates and let them (the contractors) know that they’re essential placing a bid on the contract.
To ensure that you get good end results, avoid focusing too much on the aspect of price but rather prioritize things such as: turnaround, market experience and customer testimonials. Most importantly, maintain a clear mind and talk to each roofer about what you need done. This may seem like a minor step but in real sense it can go a pretty long way towards helping you judge their gut level.
Tips for Landing Good Estimates
So what are the ways to getting good roofing, siding, and windows estimates? Here are two important questions to ponder.
*What basis is your contractor using to compile the estimate?
In order to come up with a final figure, contractors consider among other things: size of the project, layers of material that need removal, nearby structures and/or the level of previous damage of the structure. Insist on getting an answer as to what factors they’ll be looking for so you keep some side notes for comparison.
*What amount of time does he take to respond?
One of the best ways to tell if a contractor is truly worth the job is the amount of time they take to deliver the estimates. If a contractor seems redundant and unreliable at this stage – for example by committing to deliver in 2 days time, but going ahead to extend for a week or so – consider looking elsewhere as this is likely to reflect their lack of preparedness for the contract. All the same, remember to give them adequate space to do their job as they’re humans too and deserve to be treated well.
So what’s next? At this point, you probably have a few good roofing, siding, and windows contractors in mind. It’s time to call or email them for estimates. All the best!

I Love Home Improvement!

My House Growing Up

Remodeling and Home Improvement has always been a passion of mine.  Since I was 16 years old, I’ve been building things.  First with my father, then on my own, and now with my son. It has been a process that has come full circle.

My favorite thing is exterior renovation projects.  Siding, Roofing, Replacement Windows, Gutters, Decks, and my Newest Thing, Gutter Guards.  I love taking a old looking house and making it look new again.

I remember growing up in small town Illinois and working with my Dad on projects around town. Residing this house, putting a new roof on that one.  Every job a new puzzle to solve.  Every installation a new work of art to be proud of.

Driving through the town I grew up in is like a stroll down memory lane.  So many memories.  Like working on the church’s roof on the hottest summer day anyone could remember.  Or the time we build a room addition on one of the bigger homes in town during the coldest winter on record.  When working under those conditions you feel like a warrior.  When you finish, you feel relieved but also proud that you tested your meddle and you accomplished what you set out to do.

My father passed away a few years ago, but I will never forget him and the love and passion he instilled in me to build and improve.  He was a great man and a huge influence on my life.  I know he his smiling down on me from his work bench in the sky.
